Lynch. Finally got around to viewing "Mullholland Drive." How, uh, uh, Lynchian it was. One thing I like about Lynch's pictures are that they do hold your attention. It was as if Mesmer himself was inside my TV. For those who enjoy the 23 Enigma, there are at least two instances in here: the limo on its way to Mulholland Drive had a 23 in it and the address on Mulholland itself added up to 23.

NBAK. This would be your Neck Brace Appreciation Klub. Sure, everyrone's got their peccadilloes, but sheesh...."NBAK is NOT a medical site so if you have come here seeking medical advise, you are in the wrong place. To the best of my knowledge, we are the only site on the World Wide Web that specializes in "recreational" neck and back bracing. Yes, there are other sites that deal with other special interests such as casts, leg braces etc., but we here at NBAK are very focused on our special interest, neck and back bracing!!"

High Strangeness. Some excerpts from Oera Linda Book
Against the prevailing opinion, there are many reasons to believe that "Oera Linda Book" is one of the most important books about European history from about 3000 BC to at least to about 500 BC. Although the last chapter - actually the first chapter - of it was written AD 1256, it was composed to its preserved form AD 803. The most important part of it - "The Book of Adela's Followers" - was written from 560 BC to 558 BC, but was based on notes that had been kept at least 2000 years. From our point of view, the most important single event described in it was the destruction of Atland, which happened 2194 BC.
This is the just the time when also the Akkadian Sumer fell in ruins. This is the time when the first, and in many respects the greatest kingdom of Egypt was transformed into the first Interregnum. This is the time, when the great Indus nation with its towns Mohenjo-dara and Harappa got its sudden end. There is a standstill of several centuries allover, including such faraway places as China and Scandinavia. The Holocene climate was globally changed from warm and wet to cold and dry. There are impact craters in Argentina and Estonia, whose age is around 4000 years.

The Great Mystery (as uttered by...guess). "It began with an act of supreme violence, a big bang expanding ever outward, cosmos born of matter and gas. Matter and gas. Ten billion years ago. Whose idea was this? Who had the audacity for such invention? And the reason? Were we part of that plan ten billion years ago? Are we born only to die? To be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth before giving way to our generation? If there is a beginning, must there be an end? We burn like fires in our time, only to be extinguished, to surrender to the element's eternal reclaim - matter and gas. Will this all end one day? Life no longer passing to life, the earth left barren like the stars above, like the cosmos? Will the hand that lit the flame let it burn down? Let it burn out? Could we too become extinct? Or if this fire of life living inside us is meant to go on, who decides? Who tends the flames? Can he reignite the spark even as it grows cold and weak?" --Dana Scully

Video Rentals. After four years of not being one, I am now again a member of a video joint--Blockbuster, to be precise. This past Saturday, I had me a hankering to see some David Lynch. So I went up to the place, signed up, and got "Mulholland Drive" and that Johnny Depp Jack the Ripper motion picture, "From Hell." I haven't watched the Lynch yet--don't know why, but I watched "From Hell." Not great, but filled with enough weird and obscure historocity to hold my rapt attention. Who wants to chase the dragon?

Caruso's Quake and Barrymore's Wake. I was researching The Great Caruso's experiences during the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake for a potential project this past weekend. After the quake, Caruso and actor John Barrymore happened to meet up. Reading about Barrymore reminded of the great story surrounding his wake. The director Raoul Walsh had Barrymore's carcass rounded up from the funeral home and brought around to Errol Flynn's house, where the wake was to be held. There, the "wakers" propped Barrymore up in an easy chair, opened his eyes, arched an eybrow, molded his mouth into a maniacal grin, and put a drink in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other. Flynn came home after drinking elsewhere in mourning for his best friend. He saw Barrymore sitting there, and ran out of the house.

Life During Wartime. This memo just came in from the powers-that-be here at corporate HQ: The President of The United States has decided to raise the Federal Homeland Security Alert Level from yellow (Elevated) to high (orange). His decision was based upon information gathered from intelligence sources that identified potential threat to American interests overseas. The President has made this determination with an abundance of caution, indicating that there are no specific or credible threats against American interests or assets anywhere in the United States.
There are no specific threats to any business or government locations within The United States in general or New York City in particular.
New York City businesses should continue to engage in their normal corporate activities in an environment of heightened security and increased vigilance and attention to anything out of the ordinary.
It should be noted that N.Y.P.D. has been operating at the orange alert level for the last several months and will maintain this level of alert.

Jesus Hates Long Hair. Oh well, I was probably heading to Hell, anyway. And you ladies, do not wear the garb of a harlot. An excerpt: In I Corinthians 11:14 God discusses the hair style of men, and in verse 15 He speaks about the length of the ladies' hair. "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering." http://baptist-city.com/Books/Shorthair.html#concerned

Lathe of Heaven. I watched this new TV motion picture on A&E last night. It's based on the novel by Ursula K. Leguin, and it's about a guy whose dreams determine and alter everybody's else's reality. Interesting and thought-provoking. Lots of hypnosis scenes, sleeping scenes, and scenes involving lots of talking about dreams. Interesting and thought-provoking. What else was interesting about the teleflick? One of the major sponsors was Ambien, the sleep inducing drug. Did the pharmaceutical company approach the production company about making such a film, or did some brilliant ad salesperson see a great opportunity?

Life During Wartime. Looks like my cigarette-smoking schedule will be disrupted tomorrow. Fave smoking spot is adjacent to the heliport, and it looks like Dick Cheney will be landding there in his cloaking device-equipped chopper.
To: All Standard & Poor's 55 Water Street Employees
From: Standard & Poor's Internal Communications
Subject: Congress to Meet Tomorrow at Federal Hall
A joint session of Congress will be held tomorrow morning at 26 Wall Street, the site of Federal Hall, where the First Congress met in 1789. Street closures south of Chambers Street will begin as early as 6 a.m. for NYPD security checks and continue throughout the day. Intermittent freezes are expected when Vice President Cheney's motorcade is in the area. If you must drive in lower Manhattan on Friday, please keep to West Street; all other streets are subject to closure. Subways will be running and subway stations will be open but there may be delays due to heightened security.

Life During Wartime. Shoot, I know it's not exactly Nazi-occupied Europe or even Belgrade 1997, but these are the kind of alerts we get here in the Financial District:
Please note the following two items of concern to Downtown Manhattan.
On August 30, 2002, a salesperson employed by the Oppenheimer Fund, mailed out 250 letters to potential commercial buyers. The envelopes contain a cover letter with the Oppenheimer Logo and the salespersons name and telephone number. They also contain a packet of Tylenol to "cure your Stock Market headache". Unfortunately, automated letter sorters have crushed the Tylenol contained in the envelopes into a powder causing concern to recipients. If your business encounters one of these envelopes and the contents are a letter from Oppenheimer and a red and white extra strength Tylenol packet, there is no threat or prank.
On September 3, 2002 between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. there will be a small F16 flyover for an event taking place in the vicinity of Battery Park.
I actually saw the jets fly by when walking to the ferry. Desite the advance knowledge, they scared the bejeesus out of me, anyway. And just what exactly is a "small" flyover?
